Pretty as a picture
It is not hard to understand why Ben Phillips and Brie Thomas fell in love with all the land on the outskirts of Christchurch they currently own. Having a large based cottage garden, rambling green paddocks and an early 1900s cottage with high ceilings, it was rather as a picture before they even started work on it. But some work was certainly required.
“The cabin and surrounding land and gardens were in good condition as a result of the previous owner, but the cabin had endured some earthquake damage and required a semi base replacement,” clarifies Brie. The decoration of the cottage also needed a revamp, but a gentle one: Brie and Ben were adamant they wanted to maintain the colonial sense of this cottage.
“It’s really easy to want to make everything modern and spacious plan, but that is not in keeping with the cottage style, which we desired to keep,” she states. “We all love the cute, cosy feel that comes from using different rooms so we did not create any major modifications to the layout, other than moving the bathroom to the bathroom.”
To the rescue
The couple didn’t have to look too far to seek help for its renovation — the two Brie’s brothers are builders and were happy to work on the project, which she project managed. Together with Ben and Brie’s households living in Christchurch, only 10 minutes in the future, it was simple to get them to pitch in and give a hand at different times, particularly when it came to handling the garden.
Brie and Ben have completed a few previous renos Through the Years, which has meant they have built up good relationships with a team of tradies –A few of them near mates. Their experience also meant they knew exactly what they wanted to perform: renovate the toilet and edit the layout,Update the kitchen, and include a set of entrance doors to open from the master bedroom on a wee sitting area, in addition to touching other areas of the century-old cottage that needed a little TLC.
